F1: Shock results at Budapest

Daniel Ricciardo won the Hungarian Grand Prix last Sunday! He was joined by Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton on the podium. The race started with Hamilton starting from the pitlane, and his teammate, Nico Rosberg on pole. All hopes for a decent finish for Hamilton seemed to have gone up in smoke when his Mercedes veered off track in turn 2 on the first lap. However, Caterham’s Marcus Ericsson crashed after he touched the astro turf on the apex of turn 3. It was a massive shunt, which brought out the safety car. Rosberg, Vettel, Massa and Bottas were caught out, for they have crossed the pit entry line and were unable to pit. The rest of the field behind did. The extra lap demoted the 4 drivers right back in the pack. What’s more, Rosberg suffered from brake overheating issues throughout the safety car period, and after the safety car pulled in (it was extended after Romain Grosjean crashed at the same corner) his smoldering brakes proved ineffective at passing the Toro Rosso of Jean Eric Vergne.

Desperation drove Rosberg to make wild moves into the first few corners, and he managed to pull through. On different strategies and thanks to the safety car, Hamilton and Rosberg were now separated by the Red Bull of Vettel and the Toro Rosso of Vergne. On fresher rubbers and in faster cars, Hamilton and Vettel make short work of the Toro Rosso. Despite the superiority of the Mercedes, Vettel defended beautifully to hold off Hamilton, until a spin at the last corner allowed Hamilton to breeze past. Hamilton then overtook Rosberg, but was told to let Rosberg past because they were on different strategies. Rosberg, with the fast fading option rubber, was falling back at an alarming pace, and he eventually boxed for a fresh set of boots.

Meanwhile out in front, Alonso took the lead from Ricciardo as he pitted. When the Aussie came out, he was 3rd. On fresher rubber, he passed Hamilton, and a wild and early move dispatched the Ferrari. Rosberg was now 20 odd seconds behind the trio, but on fresh rubber, he was lapping 2-3 seconds a lap faster with 10 laps to go. Purple sector after purple sector he set, and eventually, 2 laps to the end, he caught them. As Hamilton focused on attacking Alonso, Rosberg was trying to seize the opportunity to pass Hamilton. The duo in 2nd and 3rd has close to no grip left on their tyres, but Rosberg had to settle for 4th eventually due to the nature of the circuit. Rosberg is still in the lead in the standings, but only by 11 points.

Once again, the Caterhams had a double DNF, as Kobayashi had to stop due to a loss of fuel pressute. We also lost the 2 Force Indias to crashes(Perez had a massive shunt in the final corner), and Estaban Gutierrez to an engine failure.
