Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific Race 1
The fifth round of the 2016 Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific Race 1 opened in support of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Fans from the world over graced the event to witness some rubber burning action. The pratice and qualifying session proved to be essential for the 30 Ferrari Challenge drivers as most of them were new to the Marina Bay circuit. It is key in understanding the layout of the track, known as one of the most challenging in the world.
Close racing opened the day for Race-1 here in Singapore. Florian Merckx took the lead and dominated Steve Wyatt in the Trofeo Pirelli class. The win helped close the gap to the Pirelli Championship leader Wyatt. Indonesia's Renaldi Hutasoit took second and Alexander West from Sweden came in third.
The Pirelli AM class was just as enjoyable for the fans where Gregory Teo set the fatest lap of the race in class. Canadian Eric Cheung, despite a well fought battle with China's Huilin Han, closed out at third.
The Coppa Shell win went to Chinese driver Yuan Yang who maintains his lead while Lian Wang, also from China set the fastest lap, closed the winners with Sam Lok from Hong Kong.
