Formula DRIFT: drivers ready and raring to go

The Formula DRIFT ProAm Series 2009 begins today and 37 of the region’s best drivers are all set to perform, entertain and compete against each other for top honours.

With 10 drivers taking part in the Formula DRIFT ProAm Series 2009, Team Goodyear is the most represented team in the event. Top performing Singaporean at Formula DRIFT Singapore 2008, Ivan Lim and the only female in the competition Jane Cheah, together with her husband Ariff Johanis, are part of the team and will be looking to put in outstanding performances.

To date, Ivan is the first drifter from South East Asia to attain his Formula DRIFT USA professional licence and through this event, hopefully more drivers from this region will follow suit to compete at that level.

In an effort to grow the sport in Asia, the Formula DRIFT ProAm Series 2009 will take on a different format from the inaugural event to feature amateur drift drivers from all around region. This is an invaluable opportunity for amateur Asian drivers to be part of a competition with others of a similar level and also share their experiences with one another. A total of 4,000 tickets have gone on sale for a more intimate set-up where spectators will be able to get up close to the exciting action. Through this, organisers hope that the audience develops a closer connection to the drivers and support them as they compete in the event and beyond.

Andy Yen, Formula DRIFT USA Judge, said ahead of the action this weekend, “I think it is great that this event focuses on drivers from Asia as this will help to promote the sport and give it a boost to the next level. I am excited to see all the amazing drift action from the drivers here and I hope that this is a good competitive platform for them to propel to greater heights. I look forward to seeing these faces some day in the Formula DRIFT USA circuit against our boys.”

Formula Drift ProAm Series 2009 takes place this weekend, 4th and 5th July, at the Changi Exhibition Centre's The Plaza.
