According to an FIA spokesman, the move was a surprise, as FIA has yet to be officially notified. The French GP was originally scheduled for the 28th of June next year.

It is a well-known fact that Bernie Ecclestone has for a long time now, wanted the French race to be moved away from rural Magny-Cours to a track closer to Paris. Magny-Cours is not particularly convenient in terms of fan accessibility. Its poor accommodation facilities have also been one of the main complaints of the F1 boss. Magny-Cours has been the venue of the French race since 1991.

The French GP has always been part of the race calendar since 1950 - with one exception. It was cancelled in 1955 after a terrible accident during the 24 hour Le Mans race.
