Jaguar announces S-Type replacement

It is unusual for a car company to announce that that existing model is about to be replaced and not release any pictures of the new car, but this is exactly what Jaguar has done. The XF will replace its mid-range S-Type in the third quarter of 2007, but we’re left to guess what the car will look like.

Could the XF look like the R-D6 (pictured), the radical 5-door hatchback concept car that was shown a couple years ago to widespread approval? It certainly would be a departure from the retro-styled S-Type, a BMW 5 Series rival, which has dated very quickly.

One problem was that it was eclipsed by the XJ Series, especially the XJ6 with its 3.0-litre V6 engine. With its aluminium construction, the XJ6 is larger, lighter and faster than the S-Type with the same engine!
