But the McLaren team once again failed to take full advantage of its peerless MP4-20 chassis after an off-course excursion by Juan Pablo Montoya handed Alonso second place in the dying moments.

The race promised much for the Spaniard’s team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, but delivered only fourth place after a costly delay at his first pit stop.

BAR-Honda’s Jenson Button was one of the stars of the race and came home a fighting fifth after a barnstorming drive from 13th on the grid.
