Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will today sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding fleet testing of its zero-emissions i MiEV electric vehicle with Iceland's Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Iceland has aggressive plans to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels; proposed testing of the electric car would begin during 2009.

The president of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, is scheduled to test drive the car in relation to the MoU signing.

Since 1980, Iceland has been making inroads toward a shift to sustainable energy, and at present the nearly 100% of the country's electric power needs are met by hydroelectric and geothermal sources. Iceland has set high environmental targets, receiving global acclaim as a clean energy leader.

In Japan, the zero-emissions i MiEV electric vehicle is currently in fleet testing with seven electric power companies, and is currently in development for a 2009 launch.
