New Accord to preview at Detroit Autoshow in January

For most of us the new cars at the Detroit Autoshow (or to follow its full name, the North American International Autoshow - NAIAS), will be largely irrelevant, but as Singapore gets the “American” Honda Accord, the revealing of the Accord Coupe Concept should give an insight to what the next Accord will look like.

The present Accord has been a little underwhelming, to say the least. When it was launched here in 2003, it was the smaller JDM spec model that created a stir. Honda rectified matters quite quickly by introducing a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine, and followed up just this year with a revised and tighter rear-end in response to criticism from the original bulbous design.

Things are looking better for the next model though. Firstly, Honda has revealed a sketch of the Accord Coupe Concept, three weeks ahead of the Detroit Motorshow! Quite clearly, the lukewarm response to the present Accord is not just restricted to Singapore. This is also the first time Honda has shown a concept car based on the Accord – in the past there was no need – the Accord name itself was good enough to guarantee its success.

Interestingly, the solitary sketch of the Accord Coupe Concept is a rear view, assuring us that it will not have a bulky backside - but will Honda continue with its strategy of two Accord models – a smaller, sportier JDM/European model, and a bigger, bulkier US/Asian model? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Meanwhile, here’s the sketch to whet your appetite: http://automobiles.honda.com/future-cars/index.asp
