Cars not commonly seen on Singapore roads are often associated with exotic and high-value purchases. But cast the net wider and we might find some that won’t burn holes in our pockets, yet maintain an appeal only keen-eyed folks can appreciate.

“Rarity” in this context may refer to low-volume models from mainstream brands, as well as older cars with very few examples remaining on the road. They could come from boutique brands, or might be sourced from parallel importers.

We get it - stay away from them if you’re after predictable resale, or if low-cost servicing parts are top priority. But if driving something a bit left-field matters, these examples will speak your language!

2011 Volkswagen Golf GTD

We don’t see many 3 door hatchbacks in Singapore these days, let alone one powered by a diesel! VW’s Mk6 GTD churns out 350 Nm of torque way under 2,000 rpm, which will make it feel more urgent than its GTI sibling; even though it’s down on horsepower (approximately 170 hp) and slower 0-100 km/h timing (8.1 seconds).

Go easy on the throttle and it can return more than 17 km/l. This stealthy example benefits from carbon bits and an upgraded headunit. NSH blasts to KL and Genting runs will be more engaging with this GTD, we reckon!

2018 Infiniti Q30 Diesel 1.5T

Built on a platform shared with Mercedes-Benz, the Q30 could be the golden ticket for those not keen to fork out more for conti car premium. The price reflects this - at less than 1 grand depreciation per month, we’re looking at the more affordable end of the scale.

Sure, you’ll be greeted with a typical diesel “clatter” on startups and it does not have a voracious appetite for revs; but a claimed 20 km/l while producing 260 Nm of torque will make this an effortless companion, regardless of road condition.

2015 Toyota Isis

If getting in and out of a car is a challenge, look no further! The Toyota Isis has no B-pillar on the passenger side, which creates an unobstructed entry space for passengers and cargo; a fascinating engineering feat taking into account its size and stature. This 7-seater has a low floor and flat interior too.

In the late noughties, it was up against the Toyota Wish, Nissan Lafesta, Mazda 5 and Honda Stream - all of them arguably more competitive in terms of authorised dealer support. A touch unconventional but thoroughly usable - the Toyota Isis scratches that itch.
