Porsche’s new 911 Turbo Cabriolet revealed

When the 996 Turbo Cabriolet arrived, most car-fanatic adults tried determinedly to control their bladders and not wet their pants, usually without much success. It was a particularly beautiful and stunning car, especially when it was a bit of a step away from the usual hard-top Turbos seen around, making it all the more lusted after.

Now, there’s a new one (now now, it really is a new one) – the 997 Turbo Cabriolet.

It has a 3.6 litre, twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder boxer engine with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) and produces a whopping 480hp and 620Nm from as low as 1,950 rpm. Even though the cabrio is a substantial 70kg heavier than its coupe brother, the manual transmission will still see neck-straining zero to hundred timings of 4 seconds, while tiptronic users will be able to see 3.8 seconds on the clock.

If that isn’t enough, Porsche also has the “Sport Chrono Turbo Package” option for those who can’t get enough G-force. That allows the engine to produce up to 680Nm for a short period of time. All that will ensure you a top speed of 310km/h, while maintaining an outrageously low fuel consumption (for this kind of car), of 12.9 l/100km.

Porsche claims that the soft-top, which folds away in about 20 seconds , exposing up to four lucky passengers to the paparazzi, helps to lower the centre of gravity. One thing which you might not want to do very much though, at least not in Singapore, is to get its automatic rear spoiler up. That wing has been raised by 30mm and will be activated at speeds from 120km/h, which apparently, will make you famous, but not too popular amongst the white-and-orange WRXs.

Along with Porsche’s own AWD system, you also get to have a set of high-performance brakes – six-cylinder calipers derived from the Carrera GT at the front or even the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) if you would prefer.

To be unveiled only on September 8th, the basic price in euro for the Turbo Cabriolet is EUR 126,600.
