World-class freestyle motocross (FMX) action was on show for the very first time in Singapore last Saturday evening, as four daredevil FMX exponents from the world’s No 1 freestyle motocross series – the Red Bull X-Fighters – took the breath away from an estimated crowd of more than 10,000 on part of the Singapore Grand Prix F1 circuit near the Singapore Flyer.

The Red Bull X-Fighters Exhibition Tour Singapore is the first stop of a three-leg Asia Pacific exhibition tour, which will also include Hong Kong and Taipei.

With the brilliantly-lit and iconic Singapore Flyer as the backdrop, Red Bull riders, Nick De Wit from South Africa and Kiwi Nick Franklin, together with Sweden’s Morgan Karlson and Belgian Jimmy Verburgh tore through the night sky and teased the enthusiastic crowd with a series of whips and 40-foot-high tricks like the ‘Double Grab Hart-Attack’, ‘Superman’ and ‘Ruler’ in the first couple of rounds to get them going.

But what the Singapore crowd really wanted was to see some signature backflips by the Red Bull riders De Wit and Franklin. Urged on by the hosts, the crowd kept chanting "backflip, backflip", and the riders did not disappoint them, pulling off some jaw-dropping backflips of different variations, much to the delight of the crowd.

The riders appreciated the response from the audience so much that they even went for an unplanned encore towards the end to close off a scintillating show.

Two of the riders, De Wit and Verburgh had recently performed to much acclaim in Cairo before the Great Pyramids of Egypt, but the duo have absolutely no doubt that the Singapore crowd was one of the best they have ever put on a show for.

"The sport of FMX is getting really huge all over the world," said De Wit. "The reactions we get everywhere we go for exhibition tours have been phenomenal. Jimmy and I recently performed in Cairo and the enthusiasm of the Egyptian crowd was overwhelming. But this crowd here tonight is something else.

"We were hoping for a good crowd tonight, so we are thrilled to hear that there are around 10,000 people, although it definitely looked more than that from where we were standing on top of the landing ramp. And they were simply awesome! We hoped that they enjoyed our performance tonight as much as we had enjoyed performing here in Singapore."
