SG: Glitch leaves thousands stranded on the causeway

A computer glitch at Woodlands Checkpoint left a huge trail of horrendous jams on Sunday night for motorists both leaving and entering the country. LTA’s traffic cameras showed that at 10.48pm, lines of traffic were stuck in both routes of the Causeway. Based on statements released by an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) spokesman, the computer system has suffered a slowdown since before 10:00 pm on that day. It took roughly an hour to rectify the issue, but at roughly 10:45pm, the system was put back online again. Even though the system was glitched, passengers were still cleared as per normal. ICA is currently investigating the cause of the hiccup.

Mr Seah, a semi-retired Singaporean living in Johor Bahru, travels across the causeway quite frequently. Normally, it would take a lot shorter to travel across it, but on that occasion, he only managed to cover 20m of road in half an hour. He describes the jam as "chaotic". Out of frustration, motorists were sounding their horns in hope that they would be cleared at a faster rate. He suggested that ICA should not rely on computers and should always have a backup plan lest things go wrong.
