Volkswagen Golf R: The Most Powerful Golf in the Range
The Golf R is the most powerful Golf in the range with 296hp and a 0 to 62mph sprint time of just 4.9 seconds. The Golf R's distinctive styling also highlights its sporty character. The new Golf R was developed by Volkswagen R GmbH to provide dynamic performance. It is powered by a newly configured TSI engine, which is not only more powerful by 30hp, but also 18% more fuel efficient than the previous engine. Its maximum torque was boosted by 22 lb-ft to 280 lb-ft. The engine went through a motorsports-style development program in order to achieve these outputs. The new 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system delivers optimal traction under all conditions on the street and on the track.
Signs of the vehicle’s sporty character are: its distinctive air intakes; specially designed bumpers and side sills and its dual-branch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes. The Golf R emphasises sportiness and performance in its restrained yet distinctive appearance. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design, explains: “The Golf R creates an exciting balance between seriousness and sportiness and between restraint and differentiation.”
The new Golf R launches on the market worldwide at the end of 2013, and customers can choose between a manual gearbox and a dual-clutch DSG® automatic transmission. Standard vehicle features include the variable-ratio “progressive” steering, Bi-Xenon headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres.
