Volvo drops the R

After giving us the 850R, followed by the pair of monsters, S60R and V70R, Volvo has decided that it shall call it a day for the "R" models. According to Volvo CEO, Fredrik Arp, it was a "hard decision" as the investment into the department did not yield expected returns. Which explains why you don't see many S60Rs on the road, much less the 850R and V70R.

Volvo will cease the sale of R-badged performance cars after the last of the 2007 models are sold and spoken for. Their last "brand new" R-badged models were the S60R and V70R, both 300bhp monsters. However, fans of Volvo shall not be too disappointed as they have made it very clear that they are still going to sell the T5 and V8 models (ie. C30 T5, C70 T5, S80 V8) and they are currently working on what they call "the next phase" of performance at Volvo. However, don't wait up for it, it is going to take a while.

If you fancy a performance Volvo, now seems to the time to go grab one as with such rarity, they are bound to become classics when production ceases. Given the tank-like hardiness of Volvo, these performance cars should serve you well.
