The A6 Avant is not all about form and style– the longer rear overhang obviously translates to a longer load area. In fact, the Avant’s load area is commodious to say the least. With the rear seats in place, the Avant offers 565 litres worth of luggage capacity, equaling its predecessor’s volume despite being less upright at the rear and up 35 litres from the saloon’s.

35 litres more load space than in the saloon might not sound much but it is when the rear seats are folded away where the Avant shows its practicality and spaciousness over the saloon with a maximum load volume of 1,680 litres, a full 685 litres more than in the four-door model. With minimal wheel arch intrusions, the load area is well shaped – it will gobble up golf bags easily and possibly a mountain bike with its front wheel removed. Moreover, the loading lip is at bumper level for easier loading and unloading.

Also standard are intelligent luggage lugging solutions such as lashing eyes, side restraining straps, bag hooks, a double cargo floor, a rail luggage fixing system, a dirt-resistant tray and roof rails as well as gesture-activated boot opening. The rest of the cabin is largely similar to other A6 models which means it’s spacious and offers a luxurious and pleasant ambience and driving environment. The A6 is the definite class leader when it comes to build quality and perceived luxury inside. Everything looks and feels expensive and luxurious – we can’t remember any surface that is brittle and hard.

You’d have to fork out a tad more for the Avant over the A6 saloon but the extra style, practicality and equipment of the Avant is more than worth its premium.
