Chery J3 5-door S-coupe 1.6 Review: Chery pickings

This J3 is far from polished when compared to its namesake (previously A3) from Ingolstadt but we'd have to give it credit for one of the best efforts yet from a Chinese manufacturer.

The Chery J3 might be China's best effort at four wheels for now but it feels more like a Korean model from about a decade ago.

Previous Chinese offerings have received some flak for their lack of safety but Chery claims that the J3 is as safe as it can be - it was awarded five stars for China's version of the Euro NCAP crash tests - the C-NCAP. The J3's safety arsenal consists of ABS with EBD and twin front airbags.

The J3 comes decently spec-ed for Singapore - in addition to the abovementioned safety kit, it also comes with remote central locking, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, fog lamps, all round electric windows, factory CD radio and so on.

Coming at just under $54k, the J3 will find it hard to make a strong case for itself, especially when the popular Korean saloons like the Kia Cerato Forte and the Hyundai Avante are both within reach of the Chinese car's price.

The Chery J3 might be China's best effort at four wheels for now but it feels more like a Korean model from about a decade ago. Chinese made cars certainly have some way to go before matching the Koreans or Japanese.
