Michelin Pilot Preceda 2
This is one highly popular tyre with the luxury marques. However we seem to be seeing more of the Pilot Preceda 2 being used in everyday car applications. We check it out...

The PP2’s construction utilises a jointless nylon cap laid on top of a full width steel belt, resulting in enhanced rigidity as well as an even distribution of stress across the contact patch at high speeds. For better control in the wet, Michelin has incorporated the PP2 with the Five Radius Tread Profile (FRTP) design, as well as a Formula-G hybrid silica compound.
Appearance-wise, it takes on a tread pattern – both asymmetrical and non-directional – not dissimilar to that on the flagship Pilot Sport 2 model. Large blocks on the outer shoulder provides for better cornering traction while the small blocks on the inside half of the PP2 allows for good wet grip and ride comfort. Four circumferential grooves promise excellent aquaplaning resistance.
The PP2 imparts a positive steering feel through the helm, feeding the driver with information on the road surface. Cruising at high speed is an effortless task for the tyre. However, for a UHP tyre, its turn-in could be slightly better.
Going into corners enthusiastically, the PP2 has more than adequate traction, keeping both understeer and oversteer at bay. The transition from grip to slip, when the PP2’s high adhesion limit is breached, is less than progressive, thereby requiring the driver to execute prompt corrective manoeuvres. In terms of braking, the tyre hauls the test car down from high speed stably and with minimal fuss.
The PP2 continues to provide the driver with a positive feel, at the same time retaining a decent level of adhesion – albeit lower than when in the dry. Mild understeer, easily rectified by a gentle lift of the throttle, is all you get when the corner entry speed is too fast. Aquaplaning is non-existent even at highway speeds. The wet braking performance is more than adequate.
Despite its fairly stiff sidewalls, a decently compliant ride is provided by the PP2, absorbing most of the minor road irregularities from transmitting into the cabin. Of course, the odd manhole covers and potholes will make their presence felt. Noise level is average for most road surfaces.
The Michelin Pilot Preceda 2 is extremely capable all-round for a UHP tyre, with excellent dry traction, much improved wet performance (over the original Pilot Preceda) and a decently comfortable ride. Highly recommended for all drivers.
