A topless S-Class, anyone?

I guess one would have to be American, more particularly Californian, to say ‘yes’ to an S-Class cabrio, but Mercedes-Benz is keen to show that it can be done

Press pictures of the ‘Concept Ocean Drive’, a concept car the German car maker is revealing at the Detroit Autoshow, were revealed a couple days ago, and the car actually looks quite convincing. Based on the latest V12 S600 L, the Ocean Drive is a rare 4-door convertible, the last one of note being the Lincoln Continental from the 1960s.

The Continental was also a handsome car, but was notorious for having an extremely flexible body. Like the Lincoln, the Ocean Drive also has frameless doors and no B-pillar, but is likely to be stronger structurally.

One notable detail is the Ocean Drive’s more upright grille – is this a prelude to an S-Class facelift? Also clever is the use of the SLK’s AIRSCRAF neck-level heating, allowing the car to be driven on cool evenings with the roof down, even for the rear passengers.

The next thing to watch for is a BMW 7 Series cabrio – the way these two German rivals dual with each other, it’s a matter of who can draw (or put the car into production) first. We understand a 5 Series-based 4-door coupe, like the MB CLS is about to be revealed
