Following Audi's success in unveiling its R8 V12 TDI concept at the Detroit Motor Show, the pressure is on for Mercedes’ performance division to follow suit.

AMG is likely to use powerful V8 diesel engines to create cars that have more than 700Nm of torque yet return better fuel consumption than petrol alternatives.

With dwelling fuel supplies, it is no surprise that even performance cars are seeking greener alternatives to petrol.

Perhaps a diesel powered Ferrari may not sound like blasphemy in the near future...
