The agreement between Fiat and Lotus will enable the Italian manufacturer to develop their own sports car based on the next Elise roadster, which should be out in around three years' time.
This move eases Fiat's entry into the sports car market, as it allows Fiat to reduce the cost of producing a new sports car, money which would otherwise be spent on the time-consuming R&D process.
