BMW Updates X5 And X6 For The Singapore Market
Each can be yours for a sliver over half a million bucks.
The high-riding luxury car segment might be flooded with choices, but if there’s one brand that’s eager to distinguish itself from the pack, BMW has to be right up there. The X5 and X6 belong to, in BMW speak, the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) category respectively, and never once did it make cross references to SUVs or crossovers.
We reckon this might play to its advantage given that SUVs nowadays are primarily deployed on tarmac. Thus, BMW’s focus on on-road driving dynamics wouldn’t backfire on cars they deem as “sports activity” vehicles.
But it can’t rest on its laurels. Sure, the X5 and X6 are worthy premium haulers, but updates to competitors like the Range Rover Sport and Lexus RX350h earlier this year might just give potential buyers second thoughts. Let’s take a look at the updates:
First up, specs and pricing
There’ll only be one spec each for the X5 and X6 - X5 xDrive40i M Sport, and X6 xDrive40i M Sport. The X5 will cost you S$506,888, while the X6 slots in at S$525,888. Fingers crossed for at least a limited run of Gen5 PHEV-equipped X5/6 in future.
Revised headlights
While BMW’s kidney grilles often steal the show, it’s the slimmer headlights that are worthy talking points here. Their arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators. Matrix LED headlights with adaptive control and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam come as standard.
Curved Display application
A 12.3-inch information display and a control display of 14.9 inches housed behind a single glass surface are pretty much standard fare on every new, higher-end BMW. BMW Operating System 8 powers the infotainment system.
Inner wild child
Another new feature is the ambient light bar with LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. The relevant model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added to the light bar’s graphic.
Straight six snarl on demand
The latest-gen 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine powers the BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive40i. There’s 381bhp on tap, 47bhp more than the outgoing model. Peak torque with mild hybrid assistance is rated at 540Nm. Both deliver identical 0-100km/h times - 5.4 seconds.
It’s safer than ever
Updates include enhanced capabilities for the standard front-collision warning system, which can now also reduce the risk of a collision with cyclists, pedestrians or oncoming traffic when turning off a road. The standard Driving Assistant also offers Speed Limit Display with no-overtaking indicator, Lane Change Warning, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning and Rear Collision Prevention.
