While the idea for the Z2 has not been given the green light, BMW is aware that there is demand in the market for an affordable roadster, particularly in the premium segment.

BMW's 1-series platform is the ideal base to provide the underpinnings of the Z2, as it has already successfully launched a convertible version for the 1-series and any modifications required should be quite inexpensive.

However, there is also a conflicting report from US based caranddriver.com that says the Z2 will be based on a shortened Z4 platform instead.

The Z2 convertible is expected to come with a soft-top and take its styling cues from the larger 1 series. Considering the available 1 series engine options, the Z2 should have a 0-100km/h time of just under seven seconds, with a top speed of about 240km/h.

BMW is expected to price the Z2 well below the Z4, which would enable the group to better compete with the Mazda MX-5.
