Boxster to have 4 cylinders?

Future entry-level Porsche may be a Boxster with four cylinders instead of six.

With ever-increasing reduced emission requirements, Porsche is said to be considering equipping entry-level Boxsters with four-cylinder engines.

The trend towards greater fuel economy is also pushing this idea along.

Since Porsche is slowly taking over Volkswagen, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine a Boxster packing one of Audi's turbocharged 4-cylinder units. Output would still be in excess of 200hp.

While it all looks possible on paper, Porsche fans will probably baulk at the idea. Losing two cylinders? An Audi derived engine? Porsche may end up with an uproar on their hands.

If they decide to go this route however, they would do well to remind their purist base that Porsche started out building sports cars this way: The iconic 356 was powered by a four cylinder boxer engine.
