The Spark, which was largely developed in Europe, will be built by GM Daewoo in South Korea, which is one of GM's success stories at the moment. Production in 2008 was a record 1.9 million which included 881,960 complete vehicles sold in Korea and exported and another 1,023,128 complete knockdown (CKD) kits of parts and components.

The Beat was one of a trio of concepts shown two years ago. Troy Clarke, president of GM North America said that feedback from more than two million people persuaded the company to go ahead with it.
