Girl in coma after being run over by motorcycle.

After 17 days of being in a coma, 9 year old Faith Naval has finally regained consciousness. The young girl was crossing the road when the front wheel of a passing motorcycle caught her, dragging her for a distance before coming to a halt. The accident on Feb 20 left Faith Naval with broken legs, multiple head injuries with a swollen brain, partial puncture of her lungs, and partial paralysis on the left side of her body. The girl was usually picked up by her mother from her school in Sembawang, but on that day, her parents were in Jakarta on a business trip. As such, the task of picking her up was given to her elder sister, Elisha, instead. At about 4.30pm, Elisha crossed Wellington Circle outside the school first, and waited for her sister on the other side, leaving Faith to cross it herself. That is when the accident occurred.

Faith was dragged for a distance of almost 3 lamp posts, leaving behind a bloody trail. Instead of either fleeing the scene or providing assistance, the motorcyclist got off his motorcycle, picked Faith up and started running away with her. According to Ms Naval, the eldest daughter in the family, Elisha ran after the motorcyclist “shouting and screaming for him to put Faith down and asking where he was taking her”. This caught the attention of several workers who then hopped off a lorry and began on a hot pursuit for the motorcyclist, who finally stopped after running for a few blocks and took cover in a void deck

According to Dr Frederick Goh, 45, a general practitioner in Bukit Timah, touching or moving one involved in an accident may result in making the injuries worse. In a case like this, in which Faith’s head was tilted and was being shaken vigourously, it increases the chances of a neck injury which could lead to paralysis.

The motorcyclist set Faith down on a table at the void deck, with her legs dangling unsteadily. She vomited some blood. She was initially warded in the intensive care unit for about two weeks in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital a few hours after the accident, and has since progressed to a normal ward. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
