Mitsubishi Unveils DSG Rivalry
Mitsubishi looks set to take on Audi and Volkswagen in terms of transmission systems. For one, they have come up with a very similar “Twin Clutch SST” that is somewhat identical to the inner workings of the VW/Audi DSG.

SST stands for Sport Shift Transmission. It is an automated manual transmission with two clutches very much like Volkswagen’s Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). No surprises then, that they used the DSG as a benchmark for developing the Mitsubishi dual clutch gearbox automated manual transmission.
The Mitsubishi unit places the odd gears (1st, 3rd and 5th) on one clutch and the even gears (2nd, 4th, and 6th) on the other. Then, the gearbox swaps between gears much faster on the upshifts as the next gear is preselected by each, individual clutch.
The SST gearbox has three shift programs - Normal, Sport and S-Sport. The Normal program suits the daily driver when driving in populated, urban areas or for highway cruising purposes. It shifts to the next gear early for better comfort and fuel economy.
The Sport mode favours the more adventurous, aggressive driver who loves dashing off the lights, and wants his gearbox to shift up later, or maybe whilst climbing hills like Cameron Highlands and so on.
Sports mode also promotes more engine brake for steeper descents, downshifting earlier than in Normal mode.
Finally, S-Sport mode is a no-compromise, all out racing mode that redlines each gear before shifting up to the next ratio. The transmission is also said to shift faster in this mode.
Right now, we have yet to find out if the SST shifts faster or slower than the benchmark DSG, but data should be available soon, so stay tuned!
