Nissan sets “Green” targets
Going “Green” has become a major issue for Nissan, and it has launched the Nissan Green Program 2010 (NGP 2010) with a wide range of targets set for both is product line-up, as well as at the factories that produce its vehicles.

Firstly, reducing CO2 output will become a key management performance indicator, with 2010 set for the launch of Nissan-developed hybrid vehicle. Also on the agenda is the launch of a “3-litre car”, a petrol-fueled car that sips under 3-litres of fuel per 100km – at the moment, the only car in production that achieves this target is the diesel-powered Smart Cdi, a tiny 2-seater.
Other “green” vehicles in the pipeline include more Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) – these will be conventional cars that are able to use bio-ethanol (E85), a fuel that consist of 85% organically-sourced bio-mass added to 15 percent of petrol. At the moment, all Nissan petrol can take E10, which has 10 percent ethanol. For the Brazil, Nissan are committed to developing engines that use E100, 100 percent bio-ethanol fuel.
Nissan also claims that its use of the Continuously-Variable Transmission (CVT) plays a role in cutting CO2 emissions, emitting 10 percent less than a conventional auto box.
Battery-power Electric Vehicles (like the Pivo concept car, pictured above) as well as hydrogen-powered fuel-cell cars are also in the pipe-line. The CO2 output from all its factories will be cut, with the Japanese factories making a 15 percent reduction by 2010.

Its an ambitious plan, but Honda and Toyota seem to be ahead of the game, especially with regards to having petrol/electric hybrid cars in regular production.
