Opel Launches New Astra Twin Top Convertible in Singapore!

Just out today and retailing for $113,888, inclusive of COE, Opel offers this warm new vehicle, designed as a cabrio-coupé with a three-part roof system. It makes up the fourth distinctive model in the Astra range. The car will be powered by a 1.8-litre ECOTEC engine with automatic transmission. The car was unveiled by Karsono Kwee, executive chairman of the Eurokars group, and Harold Koh, Managing Director of General Motors Overseas Distribution Corporation, before a crowd of 150 guests at the Auto Eurokars showroom.

The car looks like a coupé with the top up. The TwinTop roof can be fully automatically opened or closed in less than 30 seconds.

The three-piece construction is unique in the industry and found only in the high price range. Opel claims that the individual roof sections are smaller than in conventional concepts and therefore can be stowed in the boot in a space-saving manner, to the advantage of luggage space and seating comfort.

Opel engineers have included an electrically operated "Easy Load" function. At the touch of a button, the horizontally stacked roof parts in the car boot can be raised by around 25 centimeters, so that cargo underneath the protective cover is easily accessible.

With the top folded and stowed, this boot space is reduced to 205, down from 440 but even then, we would think that that is pretty reasonable.

“With the Astra TwinTop we are introducing another exciting niche car, while extending our model range in the important compact segment,” says Mr Kwee.

“Four Astra versions and the Zafira represent five different car concepts on one technical basis. That makes us more attractively positioned in this segment than any other competitor,” says Mr Koh.

Seventy-percent of the TwinTop body parts were newly developed. It measures 4.48m long, 1.76m wide, and 1.41 meters tall.

Noteworthy to the TwinTop is the well proportioned rear section, with no bulky tail spoiling the car's look, as is often the case with cabriolets that come with retractable steel roof concepts.

The car also comes with the Opel SAFETEC safety system, which combines both active and passive features, including roll bars that provide additional rollover protection when the top is down.
