Porsche Is Spending Big On Zuffenhausen Production Plant Upgrades
250 million euros pumped in for future projects including new Macan’s electric motor production.
Give me a quick summary
Porsche is making significant upgrades to its primary facility in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, implementing extensive reconstruction and expansions. The focus of these improvements is to accommodate the production of the upcoming electric sports cars in the next 718 generation on the existing assembly line, alongside the traditional two-door Porsche sports cars with a boxer engine. The investment for these construction efforts amounts to approximately 250 million euros.
Where is Zuffenhausen?
Zuffenhausen, situated in the northern part of Stuttgart, the capital of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, is one of three northernmost boroughs. This district is essentially a combination of previously autonomous townships, namely Zuffenhausen, Zazenhausen, Neuwirtshaus and Rot.
Assembly line, redefined
Porsche has extended its main plant's production line area for two-door sports cars, integrating new production phases. The use of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), similar to those used for the electric Porsche Taycan, replaces the conventional assembly line with a more flexible "Flexiline." This upgrade supports a variable production process, advantageous for future mixed production of vehicles with both combustion engines and electric powertrains on a single line.
New high-bay rack to improve logistics
It’s expanding logistics in the body shop, adding a new building near the Porsche Museum. By 2025, a high-bay rack system will supply Taycan and sports car production with vehicle parts. A recently opened high-bay rack already serves the entire assembly plant with various components. This fully automated, 35,000 cubic meters capacity warehouse has 40,650 storage spaces for pallets and containers.
Macan’s electric motors will be assembled here
Since 2016, a new assembly plant for V8 combustion engines for the Panamera and Cayenne model lines has been operational at the Zuffenhausen site. Now, the assembly of electric motors for the electric Porsche Macan is also integrated into this engine production centre. The upcoming generation of the Porsche Macan is set to commence production at the Leipzig site in 2024.
