Rare Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing destroyed
A Mercedes 300SL Gulwing was almost a complete wreck after a mechanic crashed the car on stretch of road near Pleidelsheim, Germany, last week. The extremely rare classic, one of the 1,400 original 300SL gullwing coupes ever built, was on the way to the workshop for its scheduled maintenance when it was involved in the accident. The mechanic was an employee of a professional restorer of classic Mercedes Benz vehicles. Despite the severe crash, both the 26-year-old mechanic, as well as his 19-year-old passenger, an apprentice at the workshop, were unharmed by the crash.
The car on the other hand, was. With such a severe crash, the car would require extensive reconstruction work that would add up a repair bill of 650,000 euros(SGD1,041,735.50), which the workshop’s insurance will fully cover.
At this point of time, it is not clear what caused the crash, although speed must have been one of the factors, since the car rolled at least once. Police spokesman Peter Widenhorn said that the 80kmh speed limit for the stretch of road where the crash occurred was ‘clearly not observed’. He then added that the owner remained relatively calm when the news was broken to him, but he did become very vocal upon hearing the news.
Due to its rarity, the original 300SL, both in its coupe and roadster body styles, is one of the most sought-after collector cars today. A great example would cost north of a million dollars, although the vast majority sell for between SGD$645,480 and SGD$903,672. The 300SL was the Bugatti Veyron of its day; it can reaching a top speed of 259km/h thanks to its 3.0 litre straight-six.
