SG: Businessman pays $19,000 off in coins
Businessman Ong Boon Lin, 34, was ordered by the courts to pay $19,000 to his car dealer. However, as he was unhappy with the quality of service, he decided to walk through the doors of the Exotic Motor showroom at Alexandra Road with $19,000 worth of coins, which weighed about 30kg. Apparently, the saga began when Ong approached Exotic Motor in late 2010 to sell his blue Aston Martin V8 Vantage. He had intentions to trade in the car for a new Bentley GT, and he would then top up the difference; the Bentley costs about $770,000. Exotic Motor's owner Tang Siu Tong suggested that Mr Ong consign his Aston Martin to the showroom, for he believed it will be easier for him to promote it to customers when they dropped by. However, after leaving the car with the dealer for a year, and with Mr Ong having to fork out for insurance and road tax, both parties entered into a sales and purchase agreement. Exotic Motors would purchase the Aston, and Ong would purchase the Bentley. Ong was hit with more woes, claiming that delivery issues deprived him of the Bentley he purchased. Eventually, the case was brought to court, and Ong was ordered to pay about $19,000 to cover Mr Tang's legal fees and the car's insurance, road tax and maintenance costs. Dissatisfied, Ong gathered the loose change from his shops and paid Tang.
Legally, Exotic Motors had the rights to reject the payment under the Monetary Authority of Singapore's Currency Act, even though the dealer accepted the payment despite the unsatisfactory condition of the coins.
