SG: Less CNG vehicles on the road

SG: Less CNG vehicles on the road

In 2010, almost 5,400 vehicles ran on CNG on Singaporean roads. In late September 2014 however, only 4,400 remain. In fact, almost 1,000 owners of CNG vehicles have their CNG kits disassembled since 2011, with more expected to follow. TransCab, a local taxi firm which used to utilise the gas fleetwide, has also stopped using it. In fact, less than a third of his 4,500-strong fleet of CNG cabs remain on the roads, and the last 1,500 or so will be gone within the next 2 years. CNG’s fall from acceptance can be attributed to a series of restrictions imposed on the movement and storage of CNG, which has made setting up of new stations more complicated, and CNG car owners who are disappointed with the performance. Lastly, with the replacement of the Green Vehicle Rebate with the Carbon-based incentive scheme, no longer is there a monetary incentive to switch to CNG, and thus, less are willing to fork out cash to fit the kits.  Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
