SG: LTA to push for electric cars
LTA is set to develop a blueprint in a bid to aid the mass adoption of electric vehicles in Singapore. Consultants will eventually be drafted in to study the gaps in technology, and the issues concerning the installation of the charging infrastructure, as well as the possible energy savings and the carbon emissions as a result of the use of such vehicles. Industry experts predict the rate of adoption for electric vehicles will keep climbing, and will stablise at a “very high” level within three to five years. Singapore is seen as a perfect testbed for electric vehicle infrastructure due to its size and advanced powergrid. The only deterrent for average motorists, according to electric car sharing firm Smove, is the high cost of electric cars. Smove is the only company that rents electric cars out, and has a customer base of about 450 since beginning the trial more than a year ago. To make them more affordable, experts have called for the LTA to review and revise the taxes on electric cars to make them more accessible.
