The ORA of the Cats Have Arrived

We’ve seen our neighbours in Malaysia and Thailand coo over it - and now it’s finally our turn. Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) ORA, which is better known for making cars named after felines such as the Good Cat and Lightning Cat, will be distributed in Singapore by a familiar household name, Cycle & Carriage (C&C). ORA stands for ‘Open, Reliable and Alternative’.

The first model to be offered here is ORA’s smallest model, the Good Cat (also known in Europe as the Funky Cat). Designed by former Porsche designer Emanuel Derta under the concept of “Retro Futuristic”, the BEV is achingly cute and lovable. We have no word yet on what variants will be made available, but in Malaysia two trims of 400 km and 500 km range respectively are offered. Charging is via AC/DC and maximum charging speed is 64kW, which means it’ll take roughly 42 minutes to charge up from 15% to 80% at its fastest.

The Good Cat, regardless of trim, is powered by a single electric motor at the front wheels producing 143 PS and 210 Nm of torque. Sprinting from 0-100 km/h takes a very respectable 7.9 seconds. This isn’t a fat cat by any measure too, weighing in at 1,540 kg.

Local Good Cats will offer a large touchscreen infotainment system, electric and memory seats, automatic parking capabilities and a 360 camera. It will also come with active safety features such as intelligent evade, emergency lane keeping, and forward collision warning with braking assist. Impressively, it also received a 5 star rating from the Euro NCAP.

Cycle & Carriage says that ORA will be sold from the second half of 2023 and a range of models will be continually introduced into Singapore leading up to 2030 when new ICE vehicles will no longer be allowed to be registered. As of now, there isn’t a showroom location decided yet for ORA.

The Good Cat is expected to be in Cat A and therefore should be competitively priced against contemporaries such as the Mazda MX-30 or Peugeot e-2008.
