Volkswagen has announced the arrival of the R-Line version of the 96kW / 129bhp Volkswagen Golf in Singapore. Priced at S$188,900, the Golf R-Line is aimed at drivers seeking a sportier edge. This Cat A-friendly variant boasts Volkswagen's 18-inch 'Bergamo' wheels, a lower sports suspension for enhanced handling, and advanced LED 'Plus' headlights with cornering function and poor weather lighting.

Based on the latest COE tender, the Golf Life 1.5 eTSI Mild Hybrid (96kW) costs S$168,900 with COE, while the Golf Life Plus 1.5 eTSI Mild Hybrid (96kW) is listed at S$178,900 with COE. So it’s effectively a 10 grand increase as you climb up the Golf range. It must be said though, that the Golf R-Line should not be mistaken with the Golf R - the latter costing almost twice as much in Performance Pack trim!

Inside the Golf R-Line, drivers are treated to a darkened cabin with 'Carbon Grey' decorative inserts on the dashboard and front door panels. The brushed stainless-steel pedals and sport seats with integrated head restraints, height, and lumbar adjustment, covered in a stylish mix of 'Sardegna' fabric and Art Velour microfleece upholstery, offer both comfort and elegance.

The car's infotainment system takes connectivity to new heights with a 10-inch Volkswagen 'Discover Pro' infotainment system featuring navigation and a premium seven-speaker sound system. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with voice control.

Safety remains a priority with the Golf R-Line's advanced Exit Warning System, designed to prevent potential hazards when exiting the vehicle by providing audible and visual warnings if approaching vehicles are detected from behind.

The Golf R-Line's driving performance is powered by an eTSI mild hybrid powertrain, featuring a 1.5-litre four-cylinder TSI engine with Active Cylinder Management and 48 V mild hybrid drive. Paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, the Golf R-Line achieves a top speed of 213 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of 9.4 seconds, while maintaining a combined fuel efficiency rating of 20.8km/l. We found this drivetrain combination efficient yet with a hint of sportiness that we really liked. This makes the Golf R-Line an appealing choice for those seeking a powerful, yet eco-friendly driving experience.
