Waymo To Launch Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service In Singapore In 2028

Waymo will bring its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to Singapore in 2028, working with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Land Transport Authority (LTA) ahead of its first commercial operations here.

Preparations will begin much sooner. An initial fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles is expected to arrive in Singapore over the coming months, as Waymo establishes its local operations.

Testing will move into a readiness phase in 2027, when trained autonomous specialists will initially drive the vehicles manually. This will allow Waymo’s autonomous driving system to adapt to Singapore’s road layouts, traffic conditions and tropical weather before fully driverless operations begin.

Subject to the necessary regulatory approvals, passengers will eventually be able to book autonomous rides through the Waymo app from 2028.

Waymo says it has completed more than 20 million fully autonomous passenger rides and covered over 300 million autonomous kilometres. The company currently operates commercial autonomous services in several U.S. cities and is also working towards launches in Tokyo, London and Munich.

In Singapore, the service is intended to complement the existing public transport network, including providing first- and last-mile connections.

Waymo’s vehicles use lidar, radar and cameras to provide 360-degree monitoring of their surroundings, including pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

Further details, including where the service will initially operate in Singapore, fleet size and pricing, have yet to be announced.
