The Evo IX sports new front and rear bumpers. The improved grille-integral front bumper enhances the cooling efficiency without impacting aero characteristics, whereas the distinctive and sporty rear bumper uses diffuser undersurface design that promotes underbody airflow to keep exhaust gas residues from adhering to the bumper. Carbon-fiber rear spoiler uses hollow construction to reduce weight and center of gravity. For the Evo IX, the 4G63 engine gains Mitsubishi's MIVEC valve timing technology that brings more high-end power together with better fuel economy and lower emissions. The turbocharger diffuser has been redesigned to boost low-end torque, extending the useful torque band and improving response at all engine speeds. The aluminum alloy turbocharger compressor wheel is replaced with a magnesium alloy wheel on GT models for improved response.
