Peugeot 207 1.6 Sports Review: New Pug on the Block

The 207 has a big job to do. For just under $73,000 with the ever rising COE prices (correct as of the first week of June, 2007), this hatch must supersede the cute little 206 that was adored by millions of fans worldwide, and not to forget, the old school 205

While most of you will appreciate the fact that the steering load lightens at lower speeds, and becomes heavy when traveling fast, I must say that it feels a little artificial for the enthusiast, especially at high speeds above the speed limit.

The weight of this steering rack changes too abruptly, so much so that it makes one go “woah, where did all this weight come from?” all of a sudden.

It seems impossible to break traction with this set of wheels under normal circumstances. Only when you push this car very hard will the electronics start shaking their heads at you, doing the necessary braking/control adjustments before any harm is done.

The good news, is that they are not particularly intrusive in the way old time Mercedes ESP spoilsports were. Rest assured, you won’t find yourself looking for the defeat button even if you want to momentarily go sideways for whatever means.

Conclusion

As with the Renault Clio and Megane, the Peugeot 307 and 207 follows a nagging trend – the typical French hatchback has matured. Many attribute this to the changing times and market demands, but the fact that we have yet to sample a cute little hatch that is outrightly fun to drive is such a shame.

That doesn’t mean that this car is bad though, for it is far from it. Those who seek attractive styling and excellent, continental car-like ride comfort will not be disappointed.

For what its worth, this car might just have what it takes to cause that hardened British palace guard to raise an eyebrow or two!

Now all we have to do it sit back and wait for the 207 RC - a turbocharged, 175bhp three-door hot hatch. Keep yourselves posted!
