#3.  The Red Light Beater

The penalty for failing to conform to traffic light signals in Singapore is a fine of $200 for light vehicles, $230 for heavy vehicles in addition to 12 demerit points. A driver who beats the red light twice within 24 months will have his or her license suspended.

The Traffic Police has indicated that by the end of June, a total of 240 digital red light cameras would be set up and installed island-wide to catch vehicles that run the red lights. Yet, given such strong deterrants, there are still some errant drivers who decide that they are swifter than a red light camera. Are they?

Slow down as you approach a traffic light. The traffic junction is a place where lives can be lost due to carelessness and rule-flouting.

What you should do:

#2.  The ill-mannered driver

Most of us are no strangers to this type of driver. After politely allowing the driver through, not only was there no mention of thanks (lifting up the hand is not so hard is it?), he went on to inconvenience others by making an illegal turn.

Keep calm and continue being courteous. These types of drivers will get what's coming to them. And if someone let you into a lane or gave way to you, let them know you appreciate it. Not by flashing your high beams or pressing the horn, of course - that's universally construed as aggressive behaviour. A raised hand is enough, and works just fine.

What you should do:

#1.  The Road Hogger

A road hogger is a driver who obstructs the road by travelling slower than everyone else, usually holding up an entire lane of traffic. Normally this is only a minor inconvenience, but when emergency vehicles need to get where they are going, being a hogger goes beyond the pale of inconsiderate behaviour. Take for example, the driver of this blue Honda Airwave.

We have no idea how he/she got his driving license, but it definitely seems like this driver got the question about giving way to Emergency vehicles wrong. Either that or he is oblivious to the fact that an ambulance is behind his car. Eventually, the ambulance driver has to overtake from the left lane. This video has 276, 064 hits to date and it has justly drawn the ire of netizens.

Here are more examples of this inconsiderate behaviour:

What if it's your loved one in that ambulance? If you are hogging, be more situationally aware. Check your mirrors often. Signal left when an ambulance, fire engine or any other emergency response vehicle approaches behind, and let them through.

What you should do:

With so many instances of bad driving in Singapore, road courtesy may seem like a thing of the past. Perhaps its just the sheer incompetence of some drivers, or could it be the stress of life is getting to everyone so even the mildest person can turn into a tyrant on the road.

What should we do?

Whatever the reasons (or excuses) there might be, we should all respect road rules, and avoid tit-for-tat reactions. Be gracious rather than defensive! These roads belong to all of us, not just our grandfathers.
