Commercial vehicles as alternative transportation
Commercial vehicles have gained popularity with the latest financing restrictions on private vehicle ownership. Are they a viable alternative to private vehicle ownership? We find out…
A local favourite of many is the Kangoo. Well known for its car-like front fascia, it is combined with European chic on the inside. Unlike most commercial vehicles, the front passenger and driver enjoy a low car-like seating position with good handling characteristics.
At the rear, the Kangoo offers a large cargo area that is accessible through sliding doors on both sides and a two swing-out rear doors.
Powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine, the unit provides ample torque for moving a heavy load. The engine is augmented through a 5-speed manual transmission.
Joining the Kangoo in the Eurovan fanclub, the Opel Combo is another van that has seen popular use on our roads for its ergonomic and reasonably comfortable interior touches. Like the Kangoo, the Combo has a low seating position that gives it car-like handling characteristics.
Powered by a 1.3 or 1.7-litre turbo diesel engine, this van has plenty of grunt for its modest size.
Also a hot European favourite, the Fiat Doblo is available both as a 1.3 or 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine. The Doblo comes with a very utilitarian interior that will stand up to abuse reasonably well. Its sister model, the Panorama, which is marketed as a private vehicle (MPV) by the local distributor shares almost similar mechanical underpinnings, proving that the Doblo is indeed an all-rounder.
