The neat 308 is an all-improved version of the 307, and even has a turbocharged variant now. Sounds nice, doesn't it? But will it be as successful here as the 307?

Interior

Interior quality is at an all time high from the French manufacturer now - expensive soft touch mouldings have been used extensively, and the designers have reduced the number of lines on the fascia design, lending the car's interior a cleaner environment for the driver and passengers.

The chronometer-style white dials with chrome rings on the meters adds a sporty touch, while the ergonomically sloping and wraparound dashboard ensures that every control would fall into the hands of the driver with ease.

Rear passengers will be thrilled by the huge panoramic rear windows and raised rear seats, allowing for excellent outward visibility while being cooled by the beautifully crafted rear air vents.

Taking note that low noise levels inside the car is also one of the priorities for Singaporean drivers, Peugeot has paid extra attention to the sound insulation on the new 308, as evidently seen by the insulation materials underneath the rear seats.

In addition, small conveniences but brilliant touches like the front under-seat trays and small "secret" compartment hidden in the parcel shelf on top of the huge and useful 430-litres boot makes the Peugeot 308 a generous and hassle-free family hatch.

Engine

Two engine versions are available for the 308 - the 1.6 VVT and 1.6 Turbo.

This new generation of petrol engines come packed with new technologies that promises more immediate response as power and torque comes in more readily. Such power does not come at the expense of CO2 emissions and fuel economy too.

The 1.6-litre VVT (Variable Valve Timing) engine, a collaboration between the PSA Peugeot Citroen and BMW Group, promises a superb blend of performance and economy. The engine is a gem as it has been previously sampled on various cars between the two automobile groups, notably the Peugeot 207.

Although producing a powerful 120bhp and 160Nm of torque, the 1.6-litre VVT consumes only 7.3 litres/100km while easily meeting Euro 4 emissions standards.

For those in pursuit of more dynamism and performance from their family hatchback, the top-spec Peugeot 308 Turbo will certainly be a delight. The twin scroll turbo-charged 308 comes packed with 140bhp and backed by a useful 240Nm of twisting torque from an accessible 1,400rpm. Century dash comes in a mere 9.3 seconds!

Mated to a Tiptronic system Porsche automatic gearbox, the 308 Turbo promises to be a force to be reckoned with on the roads.

Pricing

The Peugeot 308 1.6 VVT retails for $82,900 while the Peugeot 308 1.6 Turbo retails for $90,900. Both prices include COE.
