Four is better than two

Four is better than two

Things might have been different in the performance motoring world today if not for Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system.

There's not much introduction needed for Audi's mid-engine super car any more. The R8 4.2 FSI quattro made its debut in Singapore at the end of 2007. The design of the car was based on the Le Mans quattro concept car while its name was adopted from one of the most successful racing cars of all times - the R8 LMP or Le Mans Prototype. The V8 version offered 420bhp and a top speed of just over 300km/h. More significantly, the R8 was touted as the first usable mid-engined supercar since the Honda NSX and proved to be more than a credible challenger to the Porsche 911.

Just over a year after its local debut, the more powerful V10 engine 5.2 FSI quattro model appeared. The extra 100 horses the V10 makes and the soundtrack gave added performance and soul to the R8 - 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316km/h puts it in Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo territory. The topless Spyder version was recently previewed here and in the Iron Man 2 movie with local deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter of 2010.

Audi recently showed off the even more hardcore R8 GT recently. The new 560bhp beast will be here at the beginning of 2011. It not only offers more power but lighter weight and improved handling as well - we can't wait!
