Market Watch: These Naturally Aspirated V8 Monsters Are Loud, Proud And Unfiltered
NA V8s are still the benchmark for raw power and spine-tingling sound - grab them while you still can!

In our tightly regulated car market where (a) COE premiums, (b) steep ARF, and (c) reduced PARF rebates make ICE-powered cars increasingly expensive to own, naturally aspirated V8 performance cars are becoming a rarity.
Yet, enthusiasts with deep pockets are willing to dig deep to own them possibly for one final hurrah.

These machines deliver the raw sound, razor-sharp throttle response and high-revving drama that define old school cool. We extract three top picks from Carousell’s used cars classifieds.

2008 Audi R8
This mid-engined Audi R8 redlines past 8,000 rpm. A major factor for its high-revving characteristic is its high compression ratio, at 12:5:1, which improves thermal efficiency and power output. Although a 0 - 100km/h time of 4.6 seconds is far from competitive in this electrified era, it's the entire package that endows it with pure supercar appeal.

Dry-sump lubrication allows the engine to sit much lower in the chassis, which lowers the centre of gravity and improves handling. Tech details aside, just look at it: Exposed engine bay and that signature sideblade have aged timelessly!

2011 Ferrari 458 Italia
With a redline numbered at 9,000 rpm, this 4.5-litre V8 screamer delivers a top-end surge unlike anything else. More than 500 hp and 127 hp per litre makes it one of the highest outputs ever achieved by a naturally aspirated production engine.
Its party trick has to be the flat-plane crankshaft, which allows a sharper throttle response and high-pitched exhaust note.

While its 488GTB successor was armed with plenty more muscle on the performance front, the 458 Italia will always be lauded for housing one of the best NA motors ever made. Hear it to believe it!

2011 BMW M3 Coupe Competition Package
The E92 M3’s S65 V8 was derived from the E60 M5’s V10 firecracker. This shared base architecture gave it an advantage in the sound and performance department - engineering concepts were plucked from BMW’s F1 programme of the 2000s. 420 hp without help from turbocharging made it a pure driving tool, aided by a forged crankshaft and lightweight pistons.

In Competition Package trim, it comes with a lowered suspension and 19-inch rims. Do not discount its secret sauce: It's the last M3 to use a hydraulic rack, so natural steering feedback is assured!
