Porsche Revives The Slantnose With This One-Off 911 GT2 RS

Porsche has turned a 2018 911 GT2 RS Weissach into a road-legal modern interpretation of its legendary 935/78 ‘Moby Dick’ racer.

Called the Flachbau RS, the factory one-off was created through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch programme at the request of a customer. The project involved Porsche’s Style, Motorsport and Weissach teams, as well as Porsche specialist Manthey, and took almost three years.

The biggest change is up front. The GT2 RS gets dramatically reshaped, lower front wings inspired by Porsche’s classic Flachbau, or slantnose, 911s. The usual round headlights are replaced by three slim LED elements stacked vertically.

Finished in specially developed Grand Prix White, the car combines matt black and exposed carbonfibre sections with a distinctive U-shaped bonnet graphic inspired by the 935/78.

The aero has been extensively reworked, too. Manthey flaps, a new splitter, underbody, diffuser and carbonfibre rear-wheel aerodiscs join a massive rear wing inspired by the 911 GT3 R Rennsport.

The wing sits around 50 mm higher than the standard unit and can be fixed in three positions. In High Downforce mode, Porsche says the car produces 554 kg of rear-axle downforce at 340 km/h.

Despite starting with a Weissach-spec GT2 RS, Porsche managed to remove another 31.6 kg. The cabin loses its PCM system, audio equipment, much of its insulation and rear trim, leaving exposed wiring, carbonfibre and painted metal.

Porsche also went far beyond cosmetic changes. Three test cars underwent structural, aerodynamic, wind-tunnel and road testing, including 50 Nürburgring Nordschleife laps.

Testing simulated roughly 150,000 km of customer use, particularly to validate the new rear wing.
