But the Finn's joy was tempered after McLaren team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya crashed out of second place in the closing stages in a collision with Antonio Pizzonia's lapped Williams.

That handed the runner-spot to Raikkonen's arch-rival Fernando Alonso, who now moves within tantalising reach of his first world title.
Montoya maintained his lead off the line, as second row starter Jarno Trulli dived alongside Raikkonen at La Source, but was rebuffed.
