The German firm, which made the sliding soft-top on the original MINI, claims that with this new product, they have created a new form of roof for cars, which combines the advantages of a retractable hard-top with the flexibility of a traditional fabric hood.

The roof on this concept weighs only 14kg – made possible by combining polyurethane with a paper honeycomb structure to create a sturdy but lightweight material.

When the roof is folded, it lies flushed on the rear deck of the car. This eradicates one of the major drawbacks for convertibles – sacrificing your boot space.

Webasto says the LigHT concept offers a glimpse into the future and expects car manufacturers to adopt elements of it soon.
