Asia Pacific Premiere of the new McLaren Super Series 720S
The new McLaren 720S made its Asia Pacific Premiere in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on 15 March, barely one week from its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
Over 500 McLaren owners and guests including Mr Peter Lim, shareholder of McLaren Automotive, were present for the unveil of this stunning new interpretation of McLaren design language and dedication to aerodynamic principles, personifying the brand’s extreme performance DNA.
Mr Jolyon Nash, Executive Director of Global Sales & Marketing and Director of Global Marketing Mr Jamie Corstorphine flew into Singapore specially to grace the event.“It would have been easy for us to make incremental improvements and present a relatively evolutionary car to the market. But that’s not the McLaren way. We asked ourselves to push the boundaries and make significant leaps forward in performance, styling, engagement and usability and we asked the team to 'raise your limits'” Mr Jolyon Nash shared during his presentation.
The new McLaren 720S is, faster and even more dynamically capable than its McLaren 650S predecessor, with unparalleled levels of interior space and sophistication and a breadth and depth of abilities that will engage and exhilarate the driver. One glance at the 720S identifies it as a bold reinterpretation of McLaren’s design language; rooted in aerodynamic principles, the beautiful form has nothing superfluous about it: immediately and undeniably a McLaren, the new 720S is arguably the most distinctive and remarkable McLaren yet.The new M480T engine powering the McLaren 720S continues the lineage of McLaren’s multiple-award-winning, twin-turbocharged V8 engine series. The 4.0-litre engine, which has 41 percent new part content compared to the 3.8-litre engine that continues to feature in the McLaren Sports Series, generates a maximum of 720PS and 770Nm of torque.Like every McLaren road car built since the McLaren F1 in 1993, has had a carbon fibre chassis. The McLaren 720S is built with a hyper car construction with a new carbon fibre ‘tub’. With an upper structure, the McLaren Monocage II delivers extreme strength and rigidity in a lightweight structure and is the ideal base for any supercar. The Monocage II is one of the contributing factors to why the new 720S has a lightest dry weight of just 1283kg (compared to 1301kg for a comparable 650S Coupé). The McLaren engineers had pared down its weight in other areas. The electrical system is 3kg lighter than that of the first-generation Super Series, the braking system saves 2kg and the structural airboxes 1.5kg. The new suspension also delivers a significant weight saving, being 16kg lesser than the system on the McLaren 650S. McLaren’s determination to make the new Super Series as easy to live with, as it is dynamically thrilling was at the heart of the development programme throughout. The sills of the 720S drop down dramatically where the occupants’ feet swing in and out of the luxurious cabin. The exquisite dihedral doors hinge dramatically forwards and upwards as they open, taking a portion of roof in the process. Together, these features ensure a generously wide aperture for occupants entering or leaving the cabin and the door action facilitates easy access to the luggage area behind the seats.
The doors feature an 80-degree angle of opening and require 155mm less space per side than is needed to fully open the doors of a McLaren 650S. This increases accessibility when parked in tight spaces, especially in close proximity to a wall, and the doors open to only 1,953mm high, an important factor in underground parking spaces. The hand-crafted luxury inherent in a McLaren, with the authenticity of fine leathers and machined aluminium, is complemented by the revolutionary new McLaren Driver Interface, which comprises a Folding Driver Display and Central Infotainment Screen. In combination with a cabin environment that establishes new standards in the supercar segment for visibility, space and comfort, these attributes give the new McLaren 720S an incredible degree of usability and validate its claim to be the most complete supercar on sale today.
