Cadillac ELR to debut at Detroit
The Cadillac ELR will make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
The design of the ELR is based on the Converj concept car, which was shown at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, and is likely to feature the same Voltec range-extender powertrain as the Volt and Ampera. The ELR will also be built at the GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant from late next year.
The Cadillac ELR is described as “a luxury coupe featuring extended-range electric technology,” by Mark Reuss, President of GM North America.
Like the Volt and Vauxhall Ampera, GM has confirmed that "the ELR will feature an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator."
In the Ampera and Volt, the front wheels are powered by a 148bhp electric motor, which gives a range of 50 miles. When the battery runs flat, an 85bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine kicks in.
