F1: Brazilian GP Preview

This weekend’s Grand Prix at Interlagos is more than just the last race of the 2013 calendar, it also signals the end of several eras. This weekend, we bid farewell to popular Australian Mark Webber, as he leaves F1 for LMP1 after a 12 season career. He amassed 215 race starts, with 9 wins, 13 poles, 18 fastest laps and 41 podiums. He nearly won the 2010 championship as well. Next to leave their team is Felipe Massa, but he isn’t leaving F1 altogether. Felipe ended his 7 year stint with Ferrari earlier this year when the Maranello based team signed on ex-Ferrari pilot Kimi Raikkonen instead. Massa has been snatched up by former world champions Williams, and will start a new career as the number 1 driver alongside Bottas. This weekend also marks the last time the 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 engine will line up on the grid and roar off to complete the race. The engines, introduced in 2006 to replace the 3-litre V10 engines that was introduced in 1995.

7 manufacturers have had a stab at producing F1 V8s- Renault, Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Cosworth, Toyota and BMW- although only 3 dominated the sport; the Renault, Ferrari, Mercedes trio have won every race since 2006 with exception of the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix and the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, won by Button and Kubica respectively.

We also wave goodbye to Cosworth. Along with Ford, they produced incredible engines that drove the Lotus cars to victory from its debut in 1967 until 1983.

The company’s current stint in Formula One began in 2010 with Williams. They also provided affordable engines to 3 new teams on the grid: HRT, Caterham and Marussia.

So far, with no points scored to date this season, it would be sad to see such a legendary company end their streak in F1 with such a disappointing finish.
