Ferrari has revealed a brand-new track-only machine, the 296 GT Modificata. It's essentially a 296 GT3 race car with all the competition rules thrown out, which lets Ferrari push the engineering further than it could on an actual grid.

The engine is the headline: a 2.9-litre V6 pushed to around 720 horsepower, noticeably more than the regulated race version, giving it an extremely high output per litre of engine displacement.

Ferrari says the changes - new internals, a reworked fuel system, revised turbos - help it lap the company's private test track a few seconds faster than the standard GT3 car.

The bodywork has been reshaped too, with new front and rear aero pieces designed to improve cooling and downforce, borrowing some ideas from Ferrari's Le Mans-winning prototype program.

For something this extreme, it still seats two - Ferrari modified the roll cage specifically to fit a passenger seat with an intercom, so owners can bring along an instructor or a friend for the ride.

Ownership isn't just about the car, either: buyers get two years of access to Ferrari's exclusive track-day program, running at a handful of well-known circuits around the world. It's the newest entry in a line of Ferrari specials built purely for flat-out track fun, with no rulebook to hold them back.
